HMRC’s MTD pilot

Posted by Phil Thornton on 07-Sep-2017 15:31:30

HMRC’s pilot for Making Tax Digital gives advisors an opportunity to try out some aspects of the service for themselves.  Here’s some more information for anyone who wants to get involved.

MTD_test_sml.jpegFor several months, HMRC has been working with a small number of advisors on the initial testing of the Making Tax Digital services. So far, this has involved hand-holding advisors through the process of setting up an Agent Services Account so HMRC can test the subscription process and the overall service.

This part of the pilot involves working directly with the HMRC service and does not require commercial software.

As we move toward the April 2019 implementation date, more advisors will be added to the pilot as the MTD service is developed. Commercial software will be introduced to support this process.

How have Wolters Kluwer customers been involved?

Wolters Kluwer has been working closely with the team at HMRC. We recently put them in touch with our first batch of volunteers who were keen to take part in the pilot. To test everything on a small scale before expanding out, the Agents' Service is still in a ‘controlled go-live’ period, so HMRC is purposely restricting the number of agents who can access it.

Customers in this first group have been going through the following processes:

  1. Registering for a new agent Government Gateway ID
  2. Creating an Agent Services Account
  3. Adding existing Self-Assessment clients to the new account

The next step for these volunteers will be to start producing quarterly submissions for some of their clients who have been moved to the new Agent Services Account.

What will volunteers have to do?

When the pilot moves onto looking at quarterly submissions, HMRC will provide volunteers with “Terms of Participation”, which they expect them to follow.? It’s worth nothing that participation in the pilot is entirely voluntary and those taking part can leave at any time.

If you're a Wolters Kluwer customer who’d like to take part in the pilot, please contact Phil Thornton, Product Manager for Making Tax Digital at Wolters Kluwer Tax and Accounting, at phil.thornton@wolterskluwer.com.
